Hubble's law

The recession velocities of distant galaxies are directly proportional to their distance from us. The law is an immediate consequence of the uniform expansion of the universe. The relationship was discovered from observations of the redshifts of galaxies and was first announced by Edwin Hubble (1889-1953) in 1929. During the 1930s, he went on to more detailed work on the form of the relationship.
